Iceland, despite its geographic isolation, has seen an extraordinary flourishing of the Black Metal scene in the last twenty years. Born as INTERVIEW WITH VERÐI LJÓS (CREATOR OF ICELANDIC BLACK METAL PHOTO BOOK SVARTMÁLMUR) Released this year, the stunning photo book Svartmálmur is a rare glimpse into the burgeoning Icelandic black metal scene, a work that offers both a strong aesthetic vision and an unique insight into this close-knit community. Since 2006, ljós (whose real name is Hafsteinn Viðar Ársælsson) has been fashioning an “apocalyptic, cyclical strain of dissonant aggression” (tQ) under the name Wormlust. But his new book, Svartmálmur, out now on Ditto Press, proves him to be as fine an artist when crafting with light on paper, as he is recording sounds on tape.

Svartmalmur is a unique portrait of Iceland's black metal scene through the lens of photographer Verði ljós (also founder of black metal project, Wormlust).
